Where did the name Ranji Trophy Come from?

Ranjitsinhji, who represented Sussex and England while playing test cricket for India, is honored by having his name attached to the Ranji Trophy.

The Ranji Trophy, which is primarily regional in nature, can be summed up as a domestic first-class cricket series played between different regional teams. The first fixtures of the series were played in 1934–1935 after it was announced in 1934. The trophy was given by Patiala Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.

History of the Ranji Trophy

Following a conference in July 1934, the competition was officially created, and the first matches were played in 1934–35. Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala, gave the trophy in honour of Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, who had passed away the year before.

On November 4, 1934, Madras and Mysore played in the competition’s opening game at the Chepauk ground in Madras. Mumbai has won the tournament 41 times, including 15 consecutive victories from 1958–1959 to 1972–1973.

Government can also Participate?

The participation of government teams, including the Railways team and several other teams connected to government enterprises, in the tournament in addition to regional cricket boards from different states is one of the series’ most distinguishing characteristics.

What’s the importance of the Ranji Trophy

Over the years, the Ranji Trophy has grown significantly in popularity and, in more recent years, has come to resemble country cricket, which is very popular in England. In reality, the Ranji Trophy has developed into a breeding ground for some of the best Indian cricketers, who are chosen for the national squad based on their Ranji performance.
